HOW DO WE IMPLEMENT THE SDGs IN ONG TE PROTEJO?
In September 2015, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This action plan considers different global goals to benefit people, the planet and well-being, with the aim of strengthening global peace and access to justice. Each of these goals has different targets to be achieved by 2030.
The United Nations states members adopted a resolution that recognises the eradication of poverty as the greatest challenge facing the world today, stating that without poverty eradication cannot be sustainable development. On this basis, governments, the private sector, and civil society are invited to use the necessary means to achieve these goals.
This agenda has 17 different integrated goals, distributed in 169 targets that cover the 3 most important spheres: economy, society, and environment. At ONG Te Protejo, we believe that contributing to the well-being of all the beings that inhabit the planet is essential for the organisation's development and work.
For this reason, we have incorporated the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into our impact areas:
ONG Te Protejo works for the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
• Gender equality
• Responsible consumption and production
• Climate action
• Partnerships for the goals
Impact and commitment to the goals
Goal 5 - Gender equality
"Achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls":
Breaking the gender gap in all areas is necessary to reduce and eliminate the legislative, social, and discriminatory difficulties that girls and women experience daily. The balance of opportunities is essential to build an empathetic, respectful, and sustainable world, since no matter the gender, people should have the same equal possibilities. It is fundamental for Te Protejo to recognise the importance of girls and women in society. As a majority of women's organisation, this struggle is even deeper and is part of our mission in the community.
For this reason, at organisational level we have an internal gender policy, and our team of directors has been constantly trained in feminist matters in order to have a greater knowledge of these issues. Likewise, we have added news, educational graphics, relevant milestones, and other content on this topic to our editorial line, and we are already working in alliances with organisations specialised in gender equality to share accurate data.
Goal 12 Responsible consumption and production
"Ensure sustainable consumption and production practices":
Overconsumption and overproduction have a strong impact not only on the global economy, but also on the constant use of natural resources. Even though these can bring socio-economic progress, they have environmental degradation and overall destructive effects on the planet. For this reason, it is important to promote lifestyles where we do more with less. Do you want to know more about this SDG? Click here.
Promoting responsible and environmentally friendly consumption has been a commitment for Te Protejo from the very beginning. In order to work in accordance with this SDG, we have added news, educational graphics, relevant milestones and other types of content about responsible consumption and sustainable actions to our editorial line. Additionally, we have taken this SDG to the execution of external and internal projects, being the basis of the actions of our Alliances area.
At an external level, as an NGO we have committed to help multiple brands to improve their production processes through cruelty free certification processes and vegan certification (in Brazil in conjunction with our work with V-label), which allows brands to be more responsible and conscious with other sentient beings and the environment. At an internal level, we carry out Ecobeauty events, which started in 2014 with the purpose of bringing together all the brands certified as cruelty-free in Chile.
At this event, we promote multiple actions that ensure sustainable consumption patterns:
• We are part of the Zero Waste network, an initiative promoted by Fundación Basura that seeks to prevent the generation of non-reusable waste and manage the waste that is generated in a sustainable way. As a result of this collaborative work, we manage organic waste in our events, which we achieved a recovery rate of 76.4 kg in the 2023 Ecobeauty Festival and 272 kg in the 2019 Festival.
• Our events are zero waste, so we do not allow disposable stationery items, PVC items, non-reusable bags and bags made of TNT. Likewise, the stands for participants can only be made of wood or material that can be recycled, which excludes PVC or plastic items. Similarly, printing handed out in the event must be made of recyclable paper or material that can be reused.
• The modules and furniture used at Ecobeauty events is 100% recycled or reused.
• All Te Protejo events are 100% vegan.
• We work with local artists and suppliers, with which we have committed to pay on time.
• In addition to this, the work of this organisation is carried out remotely, so there are no costs related to transport, neither in petrol nor in buses. In this way, we also reduce our pollution footprint.
We believe that the combination of these aspects encourages people to choose a better quality of life and have a positive impact on our ecosystem.
Goal 13 Climate action
“Urgently take action to combat climate change and its impacts”.
We are facing a climate crisis that has taken hold at an alarming rate. Greenhouse gases, resource exploitation, natural disasters and pollution have produced an unsustainable climate emergency.
However, to avoid further tragedy, we need to take immediate action to save lives and our planet. Click here for more information on this SDG.
As an organisation that advocates for animals and the environment, it is important that we recognise the climate crisis as an issue. On this basis, Te Protejo aims to raise awareness of global warming through a friendly and clear message by publishing news, educational graphics, relevant milestones, and other related content. Likewise, we emphasise the promotion of vegan food, as much in our events as in the lifestyle of our audience, which, in addition to avoiding harm to animals, also reduces the carbon footprint on the environment.
Equally, as part of our editorial line, we make vegan-certified brands visible in our website lists, as well as encouraging other brands to become vegan-certified through our V-label certification. We also promote the vegan labels that we support as a certifying organisation through our social media and website.
Check out the vegan labels we support here.
Goal 17 Partnerships for the goals
“Revitalising the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development”:
To achieve the SDGs, we need to build partnerships and shared goals so that they can be replicated by everyone. This is how "Partnerships for the Goals" was born because a true global transformation is achieved through cooperation.
Cooperative work is essential for significant change. For this SDG, the organisation has initiated partnerships with other organisations and entities in the countries where we are present to enable strategies and positive changes for nature, animals, and people.
Primarily, we have established business relationships with local suppliers and businesses. We have also established a network of collaboration with organisations such as Fundación Basura, for environmental protection; Fundación Veg, The Animal Talk, Mercy for Animals and Veganiza tu vida for animal defence and a life without animal cruelty, and Todo Mejora and Grow for inclusion and gender, among others.
At the same time, Te Protejo generates a certified network of brands in the six countries where we work (Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, and Brazil). These brands or companies receive free benefits, content collaboration, or exchanges in the case of ventures that do not have the funding to work with us, with exchanges and collaborative work making up almost 50% of our activities as an NGO.
We also participate in communication events, such as talks and activities in educational institutions or spaces that connect with the community.
We invite you to be part of this global challenge and help our community, ecosystem, and animals. Let's promote productive and legislative changes, let's commit to the planet!
