Cruelty-Free K-Beauty: Trying Out Skin1004 Products

In recent years, several K-Beauty brands have moved toward cruelty-free policies in response to growing demand from consumers seeking more ethical skincare options. One such brand is Skin1004, a Korean brand that is certified cruelty-free and vegan by PETA.

To evaluate their performance in a daily routine, three products from the brand were tested: a toner from the Pore Minimizing line, a face mask, and a sunscreen.

Pore-Minimizing Toner

The first product reviewed was the toner from the Pore Minimizing line. The claim to “minimize pores” often raises questions, since pore size is primarily determined by genetic factors and cannot be permanently altered through the use of cosmetics. What can be achieved, however, is a deep cleanse that reduces the buildup of impurities and, as a result, improves the appearance of pores.

In many skincare routines, especially within the Korean skincare approach, toner serves to balance the skin and prepare it for the subsequent steps. However, it is not always an essential product, and whether to include it depends on each person’s specific needs.

In this case, the toner was used primarily as part of the morning routine. When you don't use a gel or foam cleanser, you can apply it after rinsing your face with water, using a cotton pad to remove any residue that may have accumulated overnight. This allows you to visually verify the extra cleansing it provides before continuing with the rest of your routine.

As for the results, no significant changes in pore size were observed, which is to be expected given the inherent limitations of this type of product. As a specific step to “minimize pores,” its impact would be limited. However, as a supplement to a facial cleansing routine, it may be a valid option depending on individual preferences and needs.

Pore-Minimizing Face Mask

The mask from the Pore Minimizing line revisits a classic format in skincare: clay masks designed for deep cleansing. It’s easy to apply and has a short processing time—about five minutes—making it a practical option for your weekly routine. Unlike other, thicker formulas, it doesn’t harden excessively or cause extreme tightness while drying.

After rinsing it off with warm water, the skin feels softer to the touch and immediately clean. Its action is primarily superficial, focused on removing impurities and accumulated residue, especially in areas where makeup or dirt tends to accumulate, such as the sides of the nose.

Like the toner, no changes in pore size were observed after several months of use, which is consistent with the inherent limitations of this type of cosmetic product. However, as an occasional treatment for cleansing and preparing the skin, it performs its function adequately.

Used before applying makeup, it leaves the skin with a more even texture and ready for the application of other products. Because it’s practical, easy to use, and delivers immediate results in terms of cleansing and softness, it can be considered a worthwhile addition to your routine, especially for those who enjoy incorporating these types of weekly skincare steps.

Hyalu-Cica Water Fit SPF 50 Sunscreen

The Hyalu-Cica Water Fit SPF 50 sunscreen has become one of the most talked-about products in the K-Beauty world in recent years. Its popularity is largely due to its lightweight texture and comfortable feel on the skin, as well as its cruelty-free certification.

Its formula has a fluid texture, similar to a water-based emulsion or cream gel, that absorbs easily and leaves a subtle, luminous finish. On combination or oily skin, this effect can be easily adjusted with a light dusting of powder, without compromising the product’s lightweight feel. One of its main strengths is that it leaves no heavy residue or sticky feeling, maintaining comfort throughout the day.

With an SPF of 50, it provides adequate protection for daily use, as long as it is applied in the recommended amount. In this regard, it is important to remember that the suggested amount for the face is approximately two lines spread across the index and middle fingers, covering the ears and neck as well.

In terms of price, it falls within an affordable range considering its category. However, one area for improvement could be the package size; since this is an everyday product, larger sizes would be more convenient.
