Testing of Cosmetics and Personal Care Products on Animals
Cosmetics and personal care products require safety assessments before they reach the market, as their ingredients and formulations can have health effects. For decades, these tests have been conducted using animals as experimental models. However, a key question is now being raised about the validity of this approach and its actual ability to provide reliable results.
What is animal testing for cosmetics?
Despite advances in alternative methods and growing ethical concerns, millions of animals continue to be used in testing for beauty and personal care products. These tests involve subjecting animals to various procedures to evaluate the safety of products or ingredients intended for human use, such as the application of substances to the skin or eyes, the forced ingestion of chemical compounds, or exposure to aerosols. Among the most commonly used species are rabbits, mice, rats, and guinea pigs.
Historically, in vivo tests have been used as a way to anticipate potential adverse effects in humans. However, the physiological differences between species cast doubt on the validity of these results. Added to this is the fact that certain regulatory requirements in some markets have prolonged the use of these practices, although there is also a growing number of companies that choose not to participate in these models and are moving toward cruelty-free alternatives.

Common Experimental Methods
One of the best-known methods is the Draize test, developed in the 1940s to assess eye and skin irritation by directly applying substances to the eyes or skin of rabbits. This procedure can cause redness, ulcers, and even vision loss, and has been widely criticized both for its impact on animals and for its limited relevance to human physiology.
Another approach involves acute toxicity tests, which seek to determine the lethal dose of a substance by forcibly administering it to animals. During these tests, the effects are observed until a significant portion of the group dies; this not only causes a high level of suffering but also varies significantly across species, limiting the tests’ applicability to humans.
Corrosion and skin irritation tests have also been used, in which substances are applied to the shaved skin of animals to observe reactions such as redness, inflammation, or necrosis. Over time, many of these tests have been replaced by reconstituted human skin models, which provide more relevant results.
Another type of assessment involves skin sensitivity testing, which aims to determine whether a substance can cause allergic reactions through repeated applications. However, these results can be subjective and do not always accurately reflect responses in humans.
Toxicokinetic studies, on the other hand, analyze how a substance is absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and eliminated by the body. Even so, biological differences between species can lead to interpretations that are not representative.
Reproductive and developmental toxicity studies evaluate the effects of various substances on fertility and fetal development. In these studies, pregnant females are exposed to compounds, and the effects on the fetuses are subsequently analyzed. However, differences in reproductive cycles and biological processes among species once again cast doubt on the validity of these results for humans.
Finally, carcinogenicity studies involve prolonged exposure to substances to observe tumor formation. These are extensive and costly studies, and their applicability to humans has been questioned due to physiological differences between species.

Effectiveness, Regulation, and Ethical Perspectives
Various studies have shown that results obtained in animals do not always allow for accurate predictions of responses in humans, due to differences in metabolism, anatomy, and physiology. This has raised questions about their validity and the potential risks associated with their use as a safety model.
At the same time, regulations have progressed unevenly around the world. While the European Union banned the sale of cosmetics tested on animals in 2013, other countries still have requirements that allow or mandate these practices. Significant progress has been made in Latin America, although the landscape remains diverse and evolving.
From a bioethical perspective, the use of animals in the cosmetics industry is increasingly being called into question, especially given the availability of alternative methods.
