In August 2023, the team from Te Protejo visited various cosmetics stores across the country to determine the availability of products certified as cruelty-free at these retail locations. The study focused on the Greater Santiago and Greater Concepción areas, covering a total of 15 stores, and was conducted with the help of volunteers.

Among the key findings, Preunic was identified as the retail outlet with the largest selection of brands certified as cruelty-free, with 53 brands available. DBS Beauty Store ranked second, with 42 brands, and Sally Beauty ranked third, with 25 certified brands.

This ranking also held true when analyzing product availability. Preunic offered the widest variety, with 604 subcategories available at the stores visited; it was followed by DBS Beauty Store, with 344 subcategories, and Sally Beauty, with 191.

“Our organization knows that hundreds of thousands of people in the country want to ensure they’re buying products that haven’t been tested on animals when they shop for cosmetics, personal care products, and makeup. That’s why we wanted to create the First Cruelty-Free Retailer Ranking, as a tool to help consumers make purchasing decisions,” said Camila Cortínez, Executive Director of Te Protejo.

Among other findings, it was determined that the product category with the greatest availability of cruelty-free options in the country was hair care. It was also noted that the seal from the U.S. organization PETA had the widest reach, with 50 certified brands—mostly imported—while “ Te Protejo ” ranked as the second-most prevalent seal, with 35 certified brands, driven by the certification of local brands.

In addition, the Essence and Catrice brands stand out for offering the widest variety of products, with 56 and 55 subcategories, respectively, among the stores visited.

“As an organization, we emphasize that the only tool we have to ensure that the cosmetic products we purchase are free from animal testing is through certification. We are pleased that this ranking will allow us to demonstrate that Chilean consumers are increasingly demanding these types of products, and that retailers like Preunic remain at the forefront of these responsible consumption trends,” added Marisol Queupumil, Director of Certifications at Te Protejo.

The ranking of cruelty-free retail outlets was compiled based on the Albert Schweitzer Foundation's methodology. To find out which brands certified as animal-testing-free are available in Chile, you can check the List of Cruelty-Free Brands at Te Protejo.

Update: In August 2025, PETA modified the scope of its certification program, limiting it solely to brands operating in countries where the organization has a direct presence. As a result, brands certified by PETA in countries where the organization no longer operates have been excluded from the lists on Te Protejo. For more information see the note.
